“Bonnie Lorna Chapman has been providing a service to the patients of the Allan Blair Cancer Center (Saskatchewan Cancer Agency) since the inception of her Creativity for Health Program in 2004 at which time she invited cancer patients to take part in an eight-week program, which was piloted at the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge. Samples of the work created by our cancer patients reflect the inner feelings that have been expressed through their individual interpretations. In many cases, the experience through art has led to ongoing psychosocial oncology support by our staff. Most memorable for me in my clinical role, was a mask that was created from many beautiful materials and could have been displayed anywhere. However, when turning the mask over, the interior was painted a dark black with a yellow lightning slash across it. The patient described it to me as representing the ‘face’ she put on for those around her and what she was truly feeling inside.
Any evaluation and feedback from group participants has always been positive, due to the benefits derived from the program and also because of the relationship that Bonnie is able to develop with them.”
